For people who have a nine to five job and who need to travel a distance everyday to get to work and back, the amount of time they actually get to spend in their own homes is remarkably little. In an average week of 168 hours, you can calculate that 63 hours are spent getting to work, spending time at work and then returning home in the evenings.
The average person with a daytime job will be in bed by 9.30 pm and will be up at 7 am every working morning. So during a working week they will spend on average 56 hours at home asleep in their bedrooms.
The only real time a person holding down a nine till five job actually gets to spend any quality time in their own homes is at the week end when they get to spend two complete days in this personal environment.
Having said this, most weekends for the average person are taken up with chores like the weekly shopping or going off to visit relatives and taking the children for a weekend outing. The point is that many people just do not spend as much time in their homes as they think they do, that is if they have day time office hour jobs.
However, there are the lucky few who do work from home. It becomes their office and home environment rolled into one. There are a few disadvantages to this, but on the whole it is a healthy and motivating situation to be in which often leads to very successful business deals being made or ventures being achieved in a positive way.
With the advent of sophisticated computer technology and networking as never before seen, it has made it a lot easier to do this efficiently. Communications have never been so good or so fast between people in different countries, let alone neighbouring towns or cities.
On the whole it is a still a minority of people who do have the advantage of working from the comfort of their own homes, as most people either have day time jobs or do shift work. There are others who travel constantly abroad on business and who generally get to spend less time in their own homes than the average person would.
But what does spending time at home actually mean to the average person. In general it should be the relaxing moments of their lives, when they can kick off their trendy shoes, let their hair down and be themselves for a few precious moments.
Being able to relax in an environment that is ones’ own means total relaxation and freedom from any stressful working environments or business deals that are happening in the office on a constant basis. It means being able to do exactly as one pleases without having to worry one iota about it. Time spent in ones’ own home is therefore a precious commodity that many of us take for granted when it fact we should be revelling in the moments.
Do you think if you spent more time working from home, you’d be more productive and happier overall?
Not really, while I do envy people who work from home, I quite enjoy coming back to a home when I don't have to worry about work. What would make me productive is having more time in the evening to stay at home more to relax and watch tv and hopefully sleep early.
